Making The Backdrops

Move down page

We started this session by introducing ourselves to Rizwan who had just joined the class and talking and looking at pictures from the exhibition. The class then explained the work we had done so far, we looked at the work on the computer and Rizwan selected his subject to photograph. We then started working on the backdrops. Dana, Rebecca and Rizwan drew and collaged their backdrops ready for scanning in. Julian and Lee were ready to work digitally on their images with a paint programme ( Paint Shop Pro 5) and merged their portraits with the backdrops they had created. They did this by using different layers, cutting and pasting sections and then working into the image with various painting tools and applying filters.

  • Over the next two weeks we all completed the work on the first project, creating backdrops for our portraits using drawings or collages, photographs and other images we had selected and scanned into the computer. We then merged the portrait with the backdrop using a computer paint programme (Paint Shop Pro 5). We used layers (cutting and pasting sections) and then worked into the image with various painting tools and filters. Finally we commented on our first project.

The next stage (weeks 6, 7 and 8) involved starting with the backdrop and then photographing people in different poses so that they appeared to interact with their backdrop just like the photos in the exhibition where the models pretended to take things from the painted fridge.
