Julian's merged artwork layered and manipulated on computer

Above: The merged portrait with backdrop, created in a computer paint programme (Paint Shop Pro 5). We worked in layers, retouching and colouring in the backdrop layer using various painting tools. Julian then had the idea for the backdrop to appear behind AND in front of the portrait which was achieved by cutting and pasting sections onto separate layers.

Julian commented about his first project:
"This picture is funny because if my portrait had a red nose on she would look like a clown!"
He felt she was saying the following about her virtual/new surroundings:
"I'm very surprised that I'm on a tropical island because I never thought I was going to a tropical island but with the power of computers I managed to go there. Yippee."
Juilian said that he wanted his subject to pose "...as if she was happy to be somewhere."
