INSPIRATION AFRICA!
Project 3
New Woodlands (EBD) School
POETRY/STORY-TELLING

The project started with a brainstorming session, looking for keywords around respect, power and authority and referring back to the frame poem the pupils had written with Sola at the Horniman Museum visit. First of all the boys wrote acrostic poems using their names and indicating special interests they may have.

Likes Maths and English
Underneath his tough skin he's lovely
Keeps playing football
Even when I am sleepy I still play football
Activities
Swimming
He likes to go over to the park
Loves beefburgers, he
Even went to the farm
Yesterday

There was then a further brainstorm for ideas and words around respect and power which were used in group and individual acrostic poems.

Respect makes people feel nice and loved. Respectful people listen and pay attention
Education is fun. I like Maths and making my own choices
Silly people do not gain respect. Sensible people do not butt in on a conversation
Power to the people!! Affection to the people!! Kindness to the people!!
Energy gives you life and adds strength to your body - body power
Calm voices, command and control, showing our brain education, showing our leadership to the world
Taking turns, giving everyone the ability to move, we don't make anyone feel worse because it is disrespectful. Miss Byrom's class

Pupils were asked what power and respect meant to them and how you gain respect ....
Sola working with pupil "Power is what makes you strong"

"Respect is what you give and do"

"Respect is sharing"

"Power gives you ENERGY"

"Respect is when you help people"

"Respect is not making someone feel worse about something. Feelings. Respect makes people feel NICE AND LOVED"

"Power means leadership, body power and BRAIN power"

"You get respect by being nice."

Based on their responses two phrases were discussed and completed individually. One pupils wrote:
I command respect by:

being good
helping someone
being kind
saying please and thankyou
my inner feelings
I demand respect because:

I helped you
I listened to you
I did as you wished
I helped you when you were sick
I took you out
I made you food

Finally patterns were made out of the phrases and words chosen to be worked on in the school's BANNERMANIA computer programme. These designs were then printed onto one of the artworks - a huge umbrella (called a kyinie) representing those used in some West African state ceremonies.
