Project 8
ARTWORK/SCREEN PRINTING

At the Horniman museum visit the pupils had been asked to remember their dreams as these would form the top images for the DREAM cushions that Tony was going to screen print with them.

First of all though they were going to print themselves as if asleep on pillows.

The pupils worked in pairs, one lying on a large piece of paper whilst another child carefully drew around them.

This shape was cut out keeping both the silhouette of their sleeping selves and the background shapes.

In Crimson class the children printed the shape of themselves using different cold colours painted onto the screens and printed and in Rose class the children printed the shape of themselves using different warm colours.

Next the children drew illustrations of their dream stories and cut the different shapes out.

Read some of their DREAM poems in the story-telling/stories section.

They then took the paper shape of themselves sleeping and drew shapes onto them. These were taken from observations of patterns they had sketched in their worksheets during their visit to the African Worlds Exhibition.

These were then cut out and laid on top of their printed sleeping shape with the dream picture shapes laid out onto the background.

The children then added 'stars' made from collecting tiny dots of paper from a hole punch and screen printed using either a warm colour blend in Crimson class or a cold colour blend in Rose class.

The blend was made using light colours at the bottom growing darker at the top just like a night sky.

When the cushion fronts were finished the children hand painted directly onto squares of fabric for the back of the cushion.

Once painted they squeegeed off the excess ink and then mono-printed designs on top.
