INSPIRATION AFRICA!
Project 8
Brent Knoll School
VISIT TO THE HORNIMAN MUSEUM

Thumbnail key object
Drawing of headrest

"On the second day (of the project) we went to see the African Worlds exhibition at the Horniman Museum and drew some pictures."

Extract from assembly script by Rose and Crimson class at Brent Knoll School.

First of all pupils listened to Viv from the Horniman Museum Education Department talking about their key object the Shona headrest.

Pupils were then given worksheets and asked to look at the headrests and write down what they thought about them and how they made them feel. They had mixed feelings:

"hard and uncomfortable because they are made of wood... peaceful... happy... sleepy... confused and tired... horrible..."

Pupils then went on to find and draw other objects in the exhibition which featured shapes and patterns including the headrests.

Viv had talked at the start of the session about the Shona headrests catching dreams and so Amoafi ended the session telling two stories about DREAMS - this project's keyword. The stories were recounted on the next Inspiration Africa! project day at the school (see the Story-telling and stories page). Amoafi also asked the pupils to try to remember their own dreams which would be used in the project.
