On Day 3 the main PRIDE project began. Year 5 heard Ayo re-tell the story of the Tortoise and the Elephant as he did on the morning of the Introduction day. They had learnt that stories in Nigeria are used to teach children about life and that they have many meanings. One important lesson to learn from this story was "Pride comes before a fall" but they also talked about the negative and positive aspects of Pride.

At the Visit to the Horniman Museum they had also seen their selected key object, the ijele mask. The ijele is community owned and can only perform on special occasions on the order and authority of the king and elders of the community. The community are very proud of their ijele which has been likened to an elephant with its huge size and slow movements.

Tony explained that over the next 3 project days Year 5 were to re-write and learn the story of the Tortoise and the Elephant and that they would perform their story at a school assembly. The class would also work with Tony to create their own 'ijele' (PRIDE) mask that reflected aspects of their community that they were proud of and for this they would also look at proverbs in more detail. The mask would then take the part of the elephant in the story and performance. Pupils would also use the computer in the classroom to access the Inspiration Africa! website which would provide a focus for their project.

To help warm up for their drama and literacy, Olusola Oyeleye - (the writer/director who worked on Projects 1-4) came into the school for the first of these days. Pupils produced frame and acrostic poems, played name games and looked at script-writing with her on this day.
