INSPIRATION AFRICA!
Project 3
New Woodlands (EBD) School
ARTWORK/SCREEN PRINTING
Each of the two classes screen printed their own deck chair cover and large ceremonial umbrella. To create the cover they began by hand painting freely and directly onto the fabric, scraping off the excess ink with a squeegee, then mono-printing textures on top using either warm or cold colour spectrums.
Each boy then selected a shape referring to their work sheets from the African Worlds visit, drew it up large and cut it out. The shapes were then put together and screen printed on top of the hand painting creating negative images. The covers were now ready to be fixed to the deck chairs.
To create the umbrella the boys worked in pairs building up backgrounds on individual sections of the umbrella by mono-printing through screens. Again they chose warm or cold colour spectrums to complement their deck chair covers.
The pupils had previously each selected a word or phrase from their poems which they then worked on in the software programme 'Bannermania'.
Once they were happy with the results the graphic images were printed out onto acetate and transferred onto screens using a photographic stencilling process.
Their photo-stencils were then repeat printed across the different sections and around the skirt that hangs from the edge of the umbrella. The sections were now ready to be sewn up.
