INSPIRATION AFRICA!
Project 1
Kemnal Technology College
Artwork/screen printing

Immediately after the pupils had made their power word sculptures in the hall on Day 3, they drew their power figures. Elements from each of their drawings would be cut out and pieced together to make two collaborative power figures to be placed on either side of the power banner/book.

Pupils' descriptions of examples:
'This is a man who has eyes everywhere so he can see all around'.

'The man in the mouth is showing that he is very strong. "I'm powerful because I have many arms and can do many things at once" '.

Day 3 continued with a discussion around different areas of power:

"We have learned lots about power and talked about spiritual power, masculinity and strength"
"We have been discussing things like: 'are men more dominant than women?' and 'do men get all the chances?'"

This was followed by the pupils doing spontaneous drawings of masculine symbols in charcoal.

CONTINUE onto Days 4 and 5 - screen printing the power banner/book and individual bags.

Pupils had already been introduced to the screen printing process on the afternoon of Day 1 when they printed their power banner. Please see the introduction day for pictures.

On Day 4 they cut out selected parts from their power drawings and screen printed them as power figures.

Picture of Viv, Sola, Jacqui and Tony holding the screen printed power banner/book which is at present going through the finishing process ready for the activating ceremony.

One of these figures will be displayed on the front and one on the back of the book. To decorate the inside, on Day 5, the pupils mono-printed their own individual squares.

Also on Day 5 the pupils screen printed their own bags into which their personal writings/memories will be placed. These are to be pinned to the mono-printed inside of the banner/book at the finishing ceremony as a way of activating it. Many of the pupils machine sewed up their own bags with help from Shelagh, one of the Cloth of Gold finishers.

Watch this space for the date of the last day of the project- the virtual banner day and also the finishing ceremony.
