INSPIRATION AFRICA!
Project 1
Kemnal Technology College
WORKSHOP DAY 1

The first workshop day began with an introduction from Tony where the project and outcomes were explained. As well as storytelling, drama, poetry, art and ICT sessions, the pupils would also screen print a large artwork - the power banner/book - based around their selected object from the African Worlds exhibition - the nkisi power figure.

This was followed with a warm-up session, directed by Olusola Oyeleye, in which the pupils, artists and staff introduced themselves by playing a name game. Next came the introductory session with Viv Golding looking at the handling collection from the Horniman Museum.

Objects were passed around and observed very closely, particulary the Egyptian mask which was approximately 3,000 years old! Lots of questions were asked and answered.

The object that had been selected, from the 'African Worlds exhibition, for Year 9 to work with was the nkisi power figure. Olusola encouraged the pupils to discuss the significance of power and make word associations which led to them being given 3 minutes to write an acrostic poem in groups of four or five:

Over people, over nations
Wealth gives you power and fame
Everybody appreciates and respects you
Rich people are able to buy authority

Power is a thing that everyone has but not everyone knows it
Only some people have the full sense of power
We should use it wisely
Everyone has it but you need knowledge to use it
