INSPIRATION AFRICA!
Project 11
Alexandra Infants School
Artwork/screen printing

On Day 3 of the project, the children worked in groups making up their wishes and then read them out to the class (see the Song, stories, drama pages).

Next Tony asked them to draw a visual representation of their wishes on A3 paper.

See some coloured-in drawings on the
Gallery page.

Tony then gave them an A4 sheet with a circle drawn on it. He asked the children to draw a simplified version of their wish illustration inside the circle.

What part of the hat is the circle? The top.

The children then cut out their shapes.

On the left Amoafi is helping cut out shapes in the Green unit where children either drew their own visual wishes (below left) or worked from their museum worksheets.

Next the children drew a strip for the brim of their hat and decorated it with simple shapes they had drawn of patterns at the African Worlds Exhibition taken from their Museum visit worksheets. These shapes were then also cut out.

The children then took it in turns to work with Sarah hand painting a background for their hat top and brim. They then laid out their shapes and printed up the cloth.

When they were dry they worked with Sarah cutting out the brim and hat top and sewing them together on a sewing machine that Sarah had brought in. Now their hats were complete!

See more finished hats in the Gallery page.

The Collaborative Landscape Banner
On Day 5 of the project, Tony and Jacqui worked in the Green unit collecting images for the collaborative landscape banner.

The idea behind the collaborative landscape banner
Tony talked to Year 1 about the whole project - what they had seen at the museum, the different objects they had looked at from the handling collection, the things Amoafi had shown them and the stories and songs they had learned.

The children were asked to close their eyes and think what was the one object that they remembered most from the project.

They then drew a picture of it and cut it out for the class banner. Following the style of their key object the Osi Audu painting - I have a landscape in my head, they printed their pieces on a brightly coloured background using opaque black ink and framed it with a cool grey border.

Their objects were now shown up in all the colours of the rainbow, a collaborative piece was created showing the 'landscape inside their heads' inspired by their experiences during the project.

The shapes used in this landscape banner were also used for the virtual banner. They were scanned onto a computer, resized and prepared for use in COGPROG.

See the virtual banner session.
