Rosemary School Print Workshops

These were 1 day a week for 6 weeks involving different groups of 11-16 year old pupils, half day at a time. Two pupils from Elizabeth Garrett Anderson also attended each print workshop.

Working on the theme of Shape the pupils cut and tore squares, triangles and circles out of paper which they then used for collaborative screen printing of large pieces of fabric. They also monoprinted and painted the fabric which was to be made into a large tent that could be erected in the school hall, the classrooms or in the sensory garden. One of the panels of the tent (shown below) was left with an unprinted area to be used as a back projection screen for the slide presentation.

They also printed on smaller pieces of textured fabric and used novelty inks (for example inks that were heat sensitive and inks that expanded to form a relief on the surface). These pieces of fabric were made into cushions and hangings with tactile qualities and stuffed with materials that created different sounds to be used in the sensory environment.

The tent has been in continual use in Rosemary school and staff have commented on its effectiveness in stimulating and focussing the children, many of whom are fascinated by it and enjoy its quiet, reflective qualities.
