Rosemary School Print Workshops
These were 1 day a week for 6 weeks involving different groups of 11-16 year old pupils, half day at a time. Two pupils from Elizabeth Garrett Anderson also attended each print workshop.
Working on the theme of Shape the pupils cut and tore squares, triangles and circles out of paper which they then used for collaborative screen printing of large pieces of fabric. They also monoprinted and painted the fabric which was to be made into a large tent that could be erected in the school hall, the classrooms or in the sensory garden. One of the panels of the tent (shown below) was left with an unprinted area to be used as a back projection screen for the slide presentation.
They also printed on smaller pieces of textured fabric and used novelty inks (for example inks that were heat sensitive and inks that expanded to form a relief on the surface). These pieces of fabric were made into cushions and hangings with tactile qualities and stuffed with materials that created different sounds to be used in the sensory environment.
The tent has been in continual use in Rosemary school and staff have commented on its effectiveness in stimulating and focussing the children, many of whom are fascinated by it and enjoy its quiet, reflective qualities.
Richard Cloudesley School Print Workshops
These took place 1 day a week for 6 weeks with year 7 and year 8 pupils. Two pupils from Elizabeth Garrett Anderson also attended each print workshop.
Curtains were created for the physiotherapy pool changing area and many of the images used on these were of faces, figures and clothes.
The pupils prepared their designs using torn and cut paper shapes which they then used for collaborative screen printing of the large pieces of fabric. This was combined with monoprinting and painting.
Individual smaller pieces of fabric on the theme of Water were produced. The pupils had been working on drawings, paintings and collages and these were used as the basis for developing their designs. The finished printed fabric pieces were made into flags, tubes and hangings to decorate the school's hydrotherapy pool.
Elizabeth Garrett Anderson School Print and Multimedia WorkshopsThe pupils visited Richard Cloudesley and Rosemary schools and met the artists, teachers and pupils. They discussed the project and prepared for the forthcoming schools' workshops.
At the start of the project they printed their own T-shirts which enabled them to experience and understand the print processes that would be used in the project.
The multimedia workshops took place over two days and a group of pupils from Rosemary School also participated.
Pupils were shown some slide/sound presentations and prepared storyboards of their ideas. The artworks were then photographed and made into transparencies and this material was combined with action shots taken during the workshops to form the slide presentation. Finally, this was prepared for installation.
The slide presentation, which as an independent piece will be used at events and for teaching purposes, also forms part of the sensory tent when it is projected onto its purpose-made back screen.
