Virtual Visitors Online Project

This project was run as one of the activities organised for the Holocaust Memorial Day held in Cardiff in January 2006.

Virtual Visitors was an online creative arts project run by artists from the arts organisation Cloth of Gold who supported the delivery of this exciting new initiative via a dedicated project website and email. The project gave pupils the opportunity to receive a ‘Virtual Visitor’ to their school and community and use the experience to explore and better understand how they respond to ‘outsiders’ and people whose appearance and customs may be different from their own.

Using art and ICT approaches that are accessible, fun, practical and clearly explained to both pupils and teachers they developed their ideas on the computer using the schools existing software and in the classroom with some traditional creative processes such as drawing and simple role play activities.

The project was run with a whole class and took place over a series of art and ICT sessions with some supporting work in-between (read more). Pupils created short digital presentations within PowerPoint incorporating their own images and some text and produced a range of unique artistic responses. They also filled in a number of online questionnaires reflecting on the project.

The outcomes of the project included:

  • project webpages that could be linked to or placed on a school website
  • pupils art and ICT work was incorporated into an exhibition in Cardiff where the Holocaust Memorial Day event was hosted,
  • made up part of a CD and a book of pupils work on the theme that was published by Cardiff Education Department.
  • A digitally printed textile banner designed by artists featuring a montage of pupils different outcomes from the project

    Project Aims

The Virtual Visitors Project aims were to enable pupils to explore in an interesting and creative way:

  • the history of the holocaust, the impact it had upon children that were caught up in it and what they can learn from it today
  • how they respond to those that appear different from them and make them feel welcome and included
  • how they communicate their feelings to each other both as individuals and in groups
  • how their voices, facial expression and body language impacts upon those around them
  • how what they say and how it’s said effects others
  • the route and consequence of prejudice and how it can be overcome

    Objectives

    The project:

  • offered oportunities for pupils to develop a greater understanding of the Holocaust and its impact upon our history
  • enabled pupils to take a greater responsibility for how they act and communicate with others
  • raised awareness of how their actions impact upon those around them
  • introduced new creative approaches to exploring values and making the right choices using art/ICT and simple role play exercises
  • explored the potential for online/virtual projects between artists and schools
  • promoted positive, imaginative and innovative approaches to tackling social issues within the school and across Wales
