On day 3 of the project Olusola Oyeleye (story-teller/writer and director) came into the school to work with Year 5 for the day alongside Ayo.

Tony wanted to start screen printing the class PRIDE mask (which was made in three sections) but first of all they had to decide what images to place on it. The lower section of the mask was going to depict local characters and professions that were valued and so Olusola helped the pupils to think of people that were doing jobs they were proud of and these included:

Teachers; Lolly-pop men; Policemen; Actors; Shop-keepers; Writers; Pilots; Mechanics; Cooks; Ambulancemen; Builders; Lifeguards; Priests; Nurses; Doctors; Caretakers; Security Guards; Parents; Firemen; Lifeguards.

The class then took turns to work in different areas - whilst some pupils drew, cut out their shapes and started printing, others had a chance to write some PRIDE frame and acrostic poems.

A group of children also listened to Ayo talking about proverbs and they were encouraged to go home and ask about proverbs from their own culture. This work informed section 2 of the PRIDE mask as on the following project day pupils drew and wrote animal proverbs including:

timid as a mouse; brave as a lion; cheeky as a monkey; proud as a peacock; wise as an owl; cunning as a tortoise (in our story); blind as a bat; sly as a fox.

In the afternoon Sola talked about scripting and the use of adverbs to show the difference between what people say and feel eg:
"Hello Sola", Tony said gloomily
"Hello Tony" Sola replied happily

Tony explained how they were to start writing their own script next week for the re-telling of the Tortoise and the Elephant. The afternoon was spent in the hall - see the story-telling/drama section.

Writing the story
On Day 4 pupils were split into groups working with their teacher, classroom assistant, Viv, Ayo and Sheila to write separate scenes from the story of the Tortoise and the Elephant. These scenes were then typed up and edited into the final Tortoise and the Elephant script ready for the rehearsals. Read the script from this link.

At the end of the project pupils wrote descriptions of their chosen images of animals and people such as in these examples:-

"My sly fox is in a mist, in a dark, dark night, searching for its dinner but doesn't look greedy today - he's looking sly."

Description of my builder: The builder is representing my uncle - he is describing how he makes cars.

They also wrote descriptions of their ijele PRIDE mask (which are shown in a pop-up window by clicking below) some of which were read out at the final performance assembly.
