WORKSHOP DAY 1

INSPIRATION AFRICA! Kemnal Technology College
WORKSHOP DAY 1 continued

The pupils then enacted a story about power called 'A man amongst men':

....before moving to the ICT suite to look at the INSPIRATION AFRICA! Website with Jacqui Callis.

This site features images and background information on the 12 key objects which have been selected to represent the diversity of the "African Worlds" exhibition at the Horniman Museum and each school project will take one of the objects as a starting point for their exploration of the exhibition.

Whilst the site was downloading some of the pupils searched for other sites featuring their chosen key object - the Nkisi power figure from the Kongo - and found the following links (as some of the websites are no longer online hyperlinks were removed 2004):

African Art, Figures of Power, Detroit Institute of Art Gallery

Tamarin Virtual Gallery

Hubar productions (text by Text by Prof. Chris Roy (University of Iowa)

After lunch (and completing their part of the activity below) the pupils continued looking around the site and started to individually log into the INSPIRATION AFRICA! classroom.

The final part of day 1 was an introduction to the screen printing process led by Tony Minnion. The pupils cut out images that symbolised power to them and then screen printed a complete banner which will be hung in KEMNAL TECHNOLOGY COLLEGE.

The next project date was Tuesday, 30 November - an afternoon visit to the Horniman Museum to see the African Worlds exhibition
