This project involved an artist and website developer from Cloth of Gold working with five pupils, the art teacher and classroom helpers from Richard Cloudesley school for children with physical disabilities over an eight week period last term (Spring 1999). The pupils worked from the exhibition of photographs at the Barbican Centre "Africa by Africa: A Photographic view" and used new information and communication technologies.

The aims and objectives of the project:

  • to enable pupils to learn and develop creative skills in ICT;
  • to show ways of using the Internet to complement learning and display creative outcomes;
  • to explore the work of African photographers in a way that is exciting and relevant and produce work that helps to articulate their own visual experience;
  • to further develop connections between Richard Cloudesley and the Barbican Centre;
  • to give pupils the opportunity of working with artists and ICT professionals and learn new techniques.

    The first week of the project was spent meeting the pupils, Dana, Julian, Lee and Rebecca (Rizwan joined the project in week 4), looking at their current artwork and introducing ourselves and our work through the Cloth of Gold website. Arrangements were made to visit the exhibition the following week.

    We have now completed WEEK 8

    This was the last week of the project which included:

  • Visit to the exhibition
  • The studio session using digital cameras
  • Making the first backdrops, working on them and merging with portraits from the studio session on the computer (first project)
  • Reversing the process, starting the second backdrops, arranging studio sessions with subject posed to interact with backdrop and merging the two together (second project).

  • After finishing the project in the last week of March, the pupils were able to meet Philip Kwame Apagya, one of the artists exhibiting at the "Africa by Africa" exhibition, who visited Richard Cloudesley School.
