Residency at St. Peter's School

In the Autumn Term of 1995 Gina Southgate and Tony Minnion from Cloth of Gold ran a screen printing residency at Saint Peter's Primary School in Wapping on the edge of London (U.K.) Docklands. The residency involved all the children and teachers at the school.

The residency began with a days InSET for the teachers where they were introduced to the screen printing process, designed and printed their own T-shirts and collaborated to create a banner.

Next each child had the opportunity to design and screen print their own T-shirt ....

This was followed by classes combining in pairs to work on the design and screen printing of four large banners to be permanently displayed in the newly decorated school hall. The theme of the banners was based on the local area concentrating on the River and Shadwell Basin and the images created for the pieces were developed from observational drawings made locally on a succession of sketching trips.

The children from Nursery and Reception classes worked together to create the River Banner.
Year 1 and 2 classes worked together to create the Wood/Metal/Water Banner.
Year 3 and 5 classes worked together to create the Shoreline Banner.
Year 4 and 6 classes worked together to create the Shadwell Basin Banner.

At the end of the residency the teachers were asked to submit a written response to the project. Their conclusions were comprehensive and thorough indicating the depth of their involvement in the project. Please click the FEEDBACK buttons on the relevant pages.

The residency was supported by St. Katharine and Shadwell Trust
