The residency at St.Georges was set up to develop creative skills with both teachers and pupils across three departments in the school - Art, I.C.T. and Technology. It began with an introduction to screen printing for year 7 pupils who worked collaboratively to create two large banners on the theme of 'Anger Masks' linking with the term's theme of African warrior masks (see above).

Next year 10 pupils worked in the schools new I.T. suite to create images on a simple paint programme that were then imported into Cloth of Gold's custom built computer programme COGPROG©. The programme allows for banners to be designed on the computer prior to screen printing onto fabric - pupils were able to decide on the colour and placement of each image and explore the effects of over-printing separate colours.

The two banners banners were comissioned by the P.E. department to hang outside the gymnasium on the theme of 'Figures in Action'. Once designs were completed a print out was made of each colour indicating the precise location of each image. Pupils then referred to the print out to set up and screen print the two three-colour banners.

The residency also incorporated cross department INSET to familiarise teachers with the school's newly established screen printing resource. After school sessions were also set up for pupils studying GCSE Textiles to enable them to include screen printed fabric samples in their course work folders.

Cloth of gold also managed to fundraise for further workshops for training new teachers in the school following staff changes in the Art department.

Visit the Gallery to view banners from other secondary school projects but please note that it has been designed for a screen resolution of 800 x 600 and so if you wish to view it at its best, you are advised to alter your screen settings. Visit the Cloth of Gold I.C.T. section to find out more about COGPROG©.
