Messages of welcome from the pupils of Kemnal Technology College sent throughout the project via the Internet Classroom

We have been looking at power and what it is to have power. To me power is to have control over other people or objects, to have a lot of money/love gives you a lot of power. This project has been good. On the introduction day to this project we made a banner with power figures screen printed on.
What are your thoughts on this topic?

Hi my name's Daryl and I'm going to tell you about the project we are working on. We are concentrating on the Nkisi power figures. People went to these figures and asked them a question. They then banged a nail or something hard into the figure and that activated the figure. We have also been making a banner that represents power. When I have learnt more I will get back to you.
BYE!

This project has been a useful and interesting use of time as I have really enjoyed having a look at the hieroglyphs and also some of the war masks were mystifying and they had loads of cool paint on them. You should volunteer immediately - as well as being educational it is also a lot of fun.

Hello my name is Steven and I am writing to tell you about the project we are doing about power figures like the Nkisi which are used to settle arguements. Our ITC co-ordinator is Jacqui, our storyteller is Sola and our screen printer is Tony. We have learned lots about power and talked about spiritual power, masculinity and strength.

Inspiration Africa! is a project that involves drama, art, and English. We have learnt about and talked about power and how power has an effect on our lives. We have been to the Horniman Museum to see Nkisi Power figures and the majority of our work has been based around these figures. This project has made us look at power in a different and unusual way and many of the things we talk about make you see power in a different way.

We have been looking at the Nkisi power figures - they are very weird and daunting - the ones that have the nails in them. From the Kongo people of central Africa, they are used by ritual experts.
What are you looking at?

We have been talking and designing things to do with 'Power'. We have been dicussing things like are men more dominant than women and do men get all the chances? We have designed a banner with all pictures connected to 'Power' and the final result was very good.

Hi it's Ben. So far I have liked this project and going to the museum. The best thing about going to the museum was learning about different things.

Since Friday we have been working on the subject of Inspiration Africa! which is a very good project. It is very interesting to find out about all the different types of African culture, plus using the internet to find out about the project.

Hi everybody, my names Lewis. I've been doing this project with Viv, Tony, Sola and Jacqui for a few days now. We had to come in when everybody was off school which was a bit of a let down but I'm glad I did because it was great fun. We did a great big banner, what did you do? What are some of your names, write back some of you.
See-Yah Bye! Bye!
