Year 3 and 5 classes worked together to create the Shoreline banner.

The design for this banner was inspired by the river shoreline. The artists designed the project to enable one class to work with objects found washed up on the river shoreline next to the school and the other class to look at the view across the river, exploring buildings on the riverside and the skyline they created as well as the colours, shape and form of the sea and sky. The colours selected for the banner were drawn from observations made by both the artists and the children.

Year 3 class collected a number of different objects from the river shoreline and took them back to the classroom. They looked carefully at the objects, chose three and made detailed sketches of them looking at the textures, colours and possible origins of the things that they had selected.

They then made a simplified drawing of each object suitable for cutting out and printing on the banner.

They drew each object a different size - a large A3 shape for the foreground, a medium A4 shape for the middle of the banner and a smaller A5 shape to be used in the background.

These drawings were carefully cut out and combined for the shoreline print. The children then coloured in their shapes referring to the original objects, using sponges, paint brushes and rags to apply the ink.

Year 5 Class went out and sketched the view of the shoreline across the river selecting a particular stretch and carefully observing the detail of what they saw.

They also looked at the sky and the river comparing colour and pattern and made notes and sketches.

These drawings were redrawn and simplified back in the classroom. They were cut out and placed next to each other across the top of the banner.

Large screens were placed over their shapes and the river and sky were hand painted in three sections surrounding their images. Stencils were used to print in their shapes in a choice of three colours.
