FADING BOUNDARIES 1/2/3 - An ongoing art and literacy project exploring cultural identity & diversity in Tower Hamlets
Funded by Big Lottery

Sarah continues to run a range of exploratory visual workshops including print alongside writers and poets including writer Heather Imani & Breise Uk. In Swanlea Secondary school she worked with groups of gifted & talented & with EMAG students. These students went on to assist artists in a series of workshops in Stuart Headlam, Canon Barnet and Kobinazrul primary schools. Visual outcomes include an outdoor story telling space, banners, books & bags.

WWW - WEMBLEY WELCOMES THE WORLD

Street banners on lampposts illustrating young peoples perceptions of their local area and to celebrate the opening of the new Wembley stadium. Preston Park secondary school year 10 pupils with Ayesha, Margareta and Anna. Banners have also been displayed at Brent annual ‘Respect ‘ festival.

KINGS CROSS CONNECTED

Designs reflecting the changing face of Kings Cross and to celebrate the opening of the new Eurostar Terminal at St Pancras International station in November 2007. Margareta, Dan and Sarah P worked with South Camden Community School and with Gaston Malia who is a graphic designer working locally. An exhibition of the designs was held at the One KX Centre in Bloomsbury and 3 PVC banners 10 metres wide were produced for site decoration for the ‘Estimated Time of Arrival’ performance as part of the Arrivals programme of events.

PROJECTS WITH SOMALI COMMUNITIES

Sarah has been working with Somali groups to explore identity, cultural heritage and language in a variety of projects which include:

SHEEKO HARIR (EYES FROM EARS) Sarah & Dan worked in Norwood Secondary School in the borough of Lewisham to raise the profile of the Somali community at the school, to extend the provision for EAL in mainstream education and to establish parent-school communication & involvement. Banners were designed from the pupils work and these hang from the school building.

SOMALI STORIES Sarah also collaborated with Oval House Theatre on ‘A visual expression of Somali Culture’. She worked with twenty-four Somali school pupils from Lambeth to make seven screen printed panels that represent the young people's perceptions of Somalia. The work became an exhibition that values Somali culture and promotes its positive contribution to today’s diverse social climate.It was initially in in Oval House Theatre and then toured to participating schools and other venues in Lambeth.

EMERGING IDENTITIES

EMERGING IDENTITIES

A pilot art and literacy project exploring the changing nature of cultural identity in the borough of Brent.
Ayesha and Joe ran print workshops alongside spoken word artists Mohammed Yahya, Abdul Rahman, Rakin Fetuga and Pamela Neil and produced personalised t-shirts, banners, poetry and prose. In John Kelly secondary school they worked with a group of yr 12 pupils and with the ‘Brent Project' for recently arrived pupils. In partnership with the AN-Nisa society in Wembley they ran workshops with a fathers and sons group and also with a group of young people.
